Henry V
Regent's Park Open Air Theatre
Reviewed on Thursday 23rd June 2016
★★

How apt that Henry V is being staged at the same time as the EU Referendum. How fitting that Shakespeare is searching for the soul of England at Regents Park Open Air Theatre while the nation is busy throwing it away at the polling stations. How disappointing it is that Robert Hastie’s production, which casts Michelle Terry in the title role, doesn’t make anywhere near enough of this timeliness as it should.

Hastie’s production begins enticingly, with Charlotte Cornwell’s Chorus proffering Henry’s crown not to any of the preening males in the ensemble, but to a meekly thankful Terry instead. It’s a neat device that elegantly sidesteps any objections to Terry’s unconventional casting by placing emphasis on Shakespeare’s own opening plea to the audience to rely upon their imaginations. “Piece out our imperfections with your thoughts,” indeed.

Sadly, aside from a visceral depiction of the siege of Harfleur – deafening gunfire, visibly terrified soldiers and a stomach-churning mix of mud, sweat and bile combine in an ugly cocktail strongly evocative of Omaha beach – Hastie’s direction fails to live up to this promising start. Court scenes plod along ceremonially, Agincourt is woefully misconceived as a cringe-worthy contemporary dance, and Henry’s inept wooing of Ben Wiggins’ Katherine – usually the comic highpoint of the play – lacks any sparkle whatsoever.

Terry’s Henry quickly transforms into a ruthless, ferocious war general and entirely overlooks the nuances of the character; this should be Prince Hal grown up, still wrestling with the hedonism of his past and the fresh burden of the throne, not some dead-eyed, humourless dictator coldly pushing his soldiers towards certain death. Terry delivers the Harfleur speech with rousing vigour amid a maelstrom of smoke and shell-fire, but criminally underplays the St Crispin’s Day address and, although she does include just the right amount of bluster throughout to make the audience question the war’s integrity, hers is not a memorable Henry.

Like Oliver Ford-Davies’ in the Gregory Doran’s recent production for the RSC, Cornwell’s Chorus is a shuffling, scarf-clad history buff, exhorting the audience to cram the ‘vasty fields of France’ into the ‘wooden O’ of the Open Air Theatre with all the charisma of a substitute teacher. But there are good performances elsewhere. Alex Bhat enjoyably over-eggs his Dauphin, turning him into a boisterous, blustering Bullingdon Club brat; Philip Arditti is an appropriately wheedling Pistol; and Bobby Delaney shines as a cynical Scouse soldier.

Henry V is an infinitely rich play, thrilling, thought-provoking, and funny in equal measure. Hastie’s version is none of these things. For all the promise of its unconventional casting, the raw potential of the Open Air Theatre, and the aptness of a play analysing England’s relationship with Europe as the nation simultaneously does the same, it really falls quite flat.

The Truth
Wyndham's Theatre
Reviewed on Monday 27th June 2016
★★★★

Following its sell out run at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Florian Zeller's wickedly funny play The Truth has transferred to the Wyndham's Theatre. Lindsay Posner's production plays with its audience - it's a smart piece with more to it than first meets the eye.

Alexander Hanson makes a triumphant return to the West End in a hugely demanding role. He plays a man having an affair with his best friend's wife. Zeller manipulates the situation spectacularly; it's a fascinating exploration of marriage, trust and reality.

Adapted by Christopher Hampton, The Truth flows just as neatly as The Father and The Mother, but it's also very different in structure. Lizzie Clachan's design fits into the Wyndham's perfectly - Posner's production has made the transition from off-West End to West End seamlessly. Gregory Clarke's sound enhances the concentrated, slightly twisted atmosphere superbly.

Hanson is absolutely tremendous as a character who sees the world through disillusioned eyes. He never leaves the stage, with his performance intensifying as the piece progresses. He plays brilliantly opposite Tanya Franks, Frances O’Connor and Robert Portal who complete the cast.

The Truth leaves you with plenty to digest, it requires concentration but it's also very accessible. Zeller's writing is so smart - fingers crossed we don't have to wait long for Zeller's next play The Lie to make its UK premiere!

The Truth is right at the top of my current recommendations list - it's well worth a look.

Bugsy Malone
Lyric Hammersmith
Reviewed on Wednesday 29th June 2016
★★★★

After its critical success last year, the Lyric Hammersmith's Olivier Award nominated Bugsy Malone returns to their main house for a second summer outing. Car chases, splurge guns and a vat full of glittery flapper dresses; there's a lot of fun to be had in Sean Holmes' production, and the kids are firmly at the forefront of it all.

Precociously talented youngsters fill the stage, from the adorably tiny Alesandro Bonelli as Dandy Dan, to the feisty Rhianna Dorris as Tallulah - who sings her big number 'My Name Is Tallulah' with soul well beyond her years. The real star of the night however is Elliot Aubrey (Fizzy), whose rendition of 'Tomorrow' is goosebump-inducingly good.

The set and costumes by Jon Bausor dazzle - with a particularly excellent car chase sequence, whilst Phil Bateman's band captures the essence of the roaring twenties with panache.

The real sparkle in this Malone comes from Drew McOnie's natty, zesty choreography - making full use of his talented young adult ensemble. McOnie's little touches light up Fat Sam's, and give life to what are essentially a string of superfluous numbers. At times it feels as though the quality of singing has been compromised by the ferocious dancing, and we never quite get to hear a full sounding production vocally - but it's certainly a sparky spectacle.

Famed for not really having much substance and a slightly lacklustre book, this production of Bugsy Malone is a welcome relief to the current climate. You can see how much joy the young performers are experiencing up on that stage, and really, what's better than that?

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (UK Tour)
Milton Keynes Theatre
Reviewed on Tuesday 28th June 2016
★★★

No childhood is complete without a theatre trip to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's colourful retelling of the biblical story about Joseph, his eleven brothers and the coat of many colours is irresistibly charming, I'm always surprised when I watch the show and realise I know every single word to every single song. It's the perfect musical for young, first time theatregoers.

There's no denying that Joseph is an absolutely bizarre show featuring everything from inflatable sheep, contrasting musical influences and a never-ending megamix during which half the show is performed again. It's crazy but secretly we all love it.

2009 X Factor winner Joe McElderry is the latest performer to take on the title role. Vocally McElderry is the strongest Joseph I have ever seen - his rendition of 'Close Every Door' is magnificent.

Former Britain's Got Talent contestant Lucy Kay also impresses as the Narrator. Kay shows off a different side to her vocal talents; in addition to soaring into her soprano range, Kay also belts out some huge notes with incredible power.

The entire cast hardly leave the stage and perform each and every number with complete dedication - I don't know where they find the energy. Their enthusiasm carries the show and ensures everyone has a fantastic time.

There's no denying that many elements of this touring production feel tired and dated. The set could do with a lick of paint whilst some costumes are crying out to be updated. Nevertheless, Joseph continues to thrill audiences. It's not just a show, but a theatrical tradition.

There is never a dull moment whilst watching Joseph - it is my girlty pleasure. I had a great time and such a laugh seeing the show again. The current cast is one of the best I've seen - it's great to see the show in such good shape.

Erich Bergen makes his London debut

Earlier this week U.S. performer Erich Bergen made his London debut with two solo shows at the London Hippodrome. The show featured music that inspired Bergen growing up, some material from his albums, as well as a tribute to his theatrical career which most notably saw him play Bob Gaudio in the U.S. touring and Las Vegas productions of Jersey Boys, before reprising his performance for the film adaptation.

Bergen put on a wild evening; he let loose on stage and gave us a taste of what he's all about. Bergen certainly knows how to tell a story and brought all the material together smoothly. Special guests Cassidy Janson and Charl Brown set the stage alight, but the highlight of the evening was when Bergen was joined by former UK Jersey Boys stars Stephen Ashfield, Tim Driesen and Michael Watson to form a Jersey Boys supergroup - many were brought to their feet. Bergen put on a superb evening with a terrific band - let's hope he returns to the UK again soon.

Wicked Young Writers Award restores faith

Hours after the EU referendum result was announced, my faith in this country was restored after attending the 2016 Wicked Young Writers Award at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. Now in its 6th year, the Awards are all about inspiring young people to use writing to express themselves by producing unique and original pieces of prose and poetry. Over 100 shortlisted finalists and their families and teachers attended the ceremony, creating an extraordinary buzz in the theatre.

Hosted by Gaby Roslin, the ceremony saw principal cast members of Wicked take turns to read the winning pieces. For the winners - some as young as 5/6 - to see their work read by professional actors on a West End stage must have been quite something! The event was heartwarming from beginning to end, the standard of work was consistently high. Laura Emmitt, who understudies Elphaba, opened with a strong rendition of 'The Wizard and I' and was later joined by Savannah Stevenson (Glinda) and the company to perform a wonderful rendition of 'For Good'. A huge commercial show such as Wicked doesn't have to organise an event like this - hats off to all involved for finding new ways to encourage the next generation talent.

      Jordan Lee Davies redefines sass

Fresh from leaving the West End production of Les Miserables, over the weekend Jordan Lee Davies performed his new cabaret Treat Yourself at the Pheasantry. Redefining the meaning of sass, Lee Davies put on an unforgettable night packed with stagey treats. He has the most incredible voice which can effortlessly switch from pop/jazz to more classical legit musical theatre. Whether he was belting out 'The Wizard and I' or giving us some Disney, Lee Davies seemed to be having an absolute ball - and so was every single person sat in the audience.

Special guests included Phantom's Celinde Schoenmaker who can do no wrong as well as recent graduate Lauren Drew who took everything in her stride whilst showing off insane vocals. The highlight of the night came when Lee Davies sang a little medley of the songs he didn't get to sing in Les Miserables. With a classy arrangement by musical director Alex Parker, the medley brought the house down and is certainly something that could be developed further. Treat Yourself is probably the most enjoyable solo concert I've seen all year - the next time Jordan Lee Davies puts on a solo show, make sure you grab yourself a ticket.

Close To You cast album released

It's been a long time coming, but finally the Close To You: Bacharach Reimagined cast recording has been released! Capturing the essence of the show (which ran at the Menier Chocolate Factory before transferring to the West End) beautifully, the double disc album does not disappoint.

Last week I attended the album launch party at the Ivy which saw the show's co-creator and star Kyle Riabko reunite with some of the cast. Riabko performed a few songs from the album acoustically - you could have heard a pin drop. Also in attendance was the legend that is Burt Bacharach himself who said some very kind words about the show and album. Bacharach is a huge supporter of Close To You, having attended all three of its opening nights in America and the UK. He then sat at the piano to accompany Riabko and the cast in attendance for a very special rendition of 'Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head'. I'm excited to see what lies ahead for Riabko and this stunning little show.

          Nadim Naaman storms the charts

Whilst starring as Raoul in the West End production of The Phantom of the OperaNadim Naaman has somehow found time to top the iTunes vocal charts with his second solo album. Entitled Sides, the album reflects both his talent for songwriting and passion for musical theatre. Naaman's own material is what I describe as 'easy listening' - he has done a brilliant job and shows off a different side to his personality. The covers on the album are fun, he's put his own spin on a few of the songs whilst staying true to the originals. Featuring a whopping nineteen tracks, Sides is certainly worth checking out - you essentially get two albums for the price of one!

Last week I popped along to the album launch for Sides which was held at the London Hippodrome. Naaman soldiered through a mammoth set list. In addition to showcasing tracks from the album, it was nice to see Naaman performing some of his musical influences - it was quite something to see a show which featured everything from original material to Jason Robert Brown, to Michael Jackson! Naaman is a musical artist who knows exactly what he wants to do. Hats off to him for doing his own thing with his own music whilst still staying true to his roots in musical theatre.
