Brandon Victor Dixon will take over as Aaron Burr in Hamilton on Broadway in mid-August (date TBC).

Joining the Broadway cast on 11th July are Lexi Lawson as Eliza Hamilton and Michael Luwoye as alternate Hamilton. As previously announced, Javier Muñoz takes over as the title role on 11th July.

Leslie Odom Jr (Aaron Burr), Phillipa Soo (Eliza Hamilton) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Alexander Hamilton) play their final performance on 9th July.

Victor Dixon is currently appearing on Broadway in Shuffle Along. His Broadway credits also include The Color Purple and Motown The Musical. He was in the original cast of The Scottsboro Boys off-Broadway, and reprised his performance in the West End.

Lawson previously starred in the first national tour of In The Heights as Vanessa. She has also played Mimi in the U.S. tour of RENT. Luwoye makes his Broadway debut in Hamilton, having appeared most recently off-Broadway in the musical Invisible Thread.

Hamilton will celebrate its 1st anniversary at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on 6th August.

Directed by Thomas Kail and featuring a book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton is inspired by the book Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.

The current cast also includes Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Rory O’Malley as King George, Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Phillip Hamilton, Daveed Diggs as Marquis De Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson and Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler.

Hamilton will open in the West End at the Victoria Palace Theatre in October 2017.

Interview: Aladdin's Chad Beguelin

Chad Beguelin wrote the book and additional lyrics for Disney’s musical adaptation of Aladdin. Having opened on Broadway in 2014, last month Aladdin crossed the pond and began its West End run at the Prince Edward Theatre.

Aladdin features songs from the classic 1992 animated film as well as some of the cut songs Alan Menken and Howard Ashman wrote for the film. In addition there is some new music by Alan Menken and Chad. Directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, the London cast is led by Dean John-Wilson as Aladdin, Jade Ewen as Jasmine and Trevor Dion Nicholas as Genie.

Chad wrote lyrics and book for The Wedding Singer which will embark on a new UK tour next year; he also wrote lyrics for Elf The Musical which received its West End premiere last Christmas. He recently collaborated with Bob Martin and Jerry Mitchell on new musical Gotta Dance which premiered in Chicago last December and is due to open on Broadway later this year. His play Harbor recently premiered off-Broadway at Primary Stages. Chad also wrote the book and lyrics for Judas & Me, The Rhythm Club and Wicked City.

I recently spoke to Chad about adapting Aladdin for the West End, how he originally came to be involved with the project and what it has been like to work alongside such an incredible creative team…

London audiences are going crazy for Aladdin! What’s it like to see the show having such an incredible response over here?
It’s amazing! When we first did the show on Broadway we went through so many changes – it was trial and error. We’ve definitely been blessed with an amazing cast here in London, it’s great to see that people are embracing it. It’s just proof that London audiences are really full of smart people.

I love that there are a few British references slotted in, how much did you re-work the script for the West End?
The funny thing is that initially we changed a lot of the references we were worried might not translate, but when we got into rehearsal the cast were like “No, no… we’ve got to do the original joke here – the audiences will get it.” So we started out being overly cautious, but the cast were amazing and helped us translate what would work over here and what wouldn’t.

Let’s rewind to the beginning of your Aladdin journey. How did you initially take on the project?
Well when it started out it wasn’t Broadway-bound. I was brought in and given a list of titles that Disney wanted to have writers create scripts for so they could licence them out, never with Broadway being the goal. When I saw Aladdin was on the list I immediately said “that’s the one I want to do” because I love the movie – it’s my favourite film and score. I was just happy to be working on it in that small way.

Then we did a reading for Thomas Schumacher (president of Disney Theatrical Group) and he said, “I had an amazing time today – this changes everything”. The next thing we knew – within minutes – we were in a boardroom and it became clear the show was going to have a much bigger life than originally intended.

And you worked on the show for a long time before getting to Broadway – you did a few out-of-town tryouts.
One of the things that makes this show so special is that Alan Menken really wanted us to try as hard as we could to get as many songs that were cut from the film back into the show so they would have a life again. I’m a huge Howard Ashman fan, so I’m happy and thrilled at any opportunity to rediscover any of his lyrics. The trick of that was how to incorporate them and make them feel organic to the plot and like they were pushing the story forward.

We didn’t want it to feel like a jigsaw puzzle that had just been thrown together. How we used those songs kept developing along the way. I also got the privilege to write four new songs with Alan. We had to bring together the Aladdin that the world knew with the Aladdin that Howard and Alan had originally created.

Exactly, it stays very true to the film but there are a few surprises along the way.
Yes – that was always the goal. We didn’t want to short-change people who are diehard fans of the film, but we also didn’t want to put a carbon copy of the movie on stage. That’s the brilliance of Casey Nicholaw (director/choreographer) who knew exactly how to shape the show. It’s really an old fashioned musical comedy, but if you love the film – which is more of an action-adventure – you also get that aspect too.

The entire creative team is incredible – what is the atmosphere like amongst you all?
Well at first it was pretty intimidating because Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice are my heroes. It was a little scary when I went to meet Alan – you walk in and there’s every award under the sun sitting on his piano. It was mind blowing. He’s such a warm guy and so collaborative that the intimidation went very quickly. I think the best thing about this group is that because they’re all such great artists, they know the best idea wins so there’s never any fighting for somebody’s idea to be taken further. We always had very open discussions, it was trial and error from the beginning.

How involved do you tend to be for rehearsals and previews?
Well for the Broadway production I was obviously there every single day and we were making changes like crazy. For this production I was there for the first few rehearsals. We went over the script and looked at what we thought might not work. I was here for some of the preview period to make sure things were still working and landing.

What do you think about the London cast? I like that they’ve done their own thing with the roles.
It’s really exciting to see this cast because they bring such great personality. It feels like a brand new show because they’re so amazing and different in such surprising and fun ways. Dean (John Wilson) has got a little swag to him which makes his Aladdin fun – I love that up against Jade (Ewen) because her Jasmine doesn’t take any of it for a second. It’s a great dynamic. Of course Trevor (Dion Nicholas, Genie) is amazing and just a joy to watch and even more fun to work with.

When different projects come in your direction, what makes one stand out for you? What gets you excited about working on a show?
Well, with Aladdin I think what appealed to me was the journey Aladdin goes on. At the beginning he has this impossible, crazy dream and then he takes a wrong turn and becomes somebody he isn’t. I love that message – in the end he finally does the right thing and all his dreams come true. I also like it when you can have a lot of fun – the bromance between Genie and Aladdin is great fun to watch.

So if I said, “Chad I’ve won the lottery and have billions of dollars to produce a show for you to work on”, what would you choose?
Well I’m working on a show right now, also with Casey, called The Prom which I’m very excited about. It sort of follows a girl who wants to take another girl to the high school prom. It’s got a message to it, but obviously because it’s Casey it has also got a lot of humour and splashy dance numbers.

Charity football match Les Misérables V The Phantom Of The Opera is returning for 'The Decider'.

Having each won two matches in recent years, the two titans of the West End will battle it out for the title of Ultimate Champions at Bromley Football Club on Sunday 7th August 2016.

Raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and the road safety charity Brake, the West End teams will be joined on the day by celebrities and professional footballers. The afternoon will open with a concert at 1.30pm, with performances from West End and Broadway stars including Daniel Boys, Fallen Angels, Kerry Ellis, Rob Houchen, Lucie Jones, Eva Noblezada, Lauren Samuels and VOX.

The match kicks off at 3.00pm. Les Mis will be managed by England U21 manager Gareth Southgate, whilst the Phantom team will be coached by England Ladies manager Mark Sampson.

Alongside the West End performers and backstage crews, famous players in the match will include Hollyoaks stars Danny Mac and Ayden Callaghan, X Factor winner Sam Bailey, actor Ralf Little, TV presenter Matt Johnson, CBeebies host Andy Day and ex-professional footballers Paul Jones and Paul McVeigh.

Radio 5 Live and BBC TV pundit Mark Clemmit will also be there to bring a lively pitch-side commentary throughout the day.

Les Mis v Phantom has raised over £80,000 for charitysince it began. Five years ago, Melanie Oakley-Dow, the wig mistress at Les Misérables was diagnosed with cancer. The match between the two musicals was set up by Chris Key to support her and raise money for her chosen charity: Macmillan Cancer Support. Sadly, Melanie passed away in 2014, so the day is now held in her memory and a share of the money raised will go to Macmillan to help ensure that nobody faces cancer alone.

A donation will also be made to Brake, the road safety charity. Brake has been chosen as one of the nominated charities this year because of one star’s personal connection with the charity. Jonny Purchase, currently performing as Feuilly in Les Miserables, tragically lost his dad in a road crash.

Jonny said: "I lost my father in a motorcycle crash in 2002 and Brake did tremendous work for our family, helping and supporting us through that difficult time. The work Brake undertakes is so important in helping those who have been involved or have had loved ones involved in road traffic crashes."

The day promises to be a fun day out for all the family with face painting, bouncy castle, stalls and a raffle, as well as food and drink. For tickets, which range from £5 - £35 (£35 VIP tickets include access to a reserved seating area, private bar and the opportunity to meet and mingle with the players), visit www.ticketsource.co.uk/lesmisvphantom5.

EdFringe Review: Sally Phillips and Lily Bevan - Talking to Strangers at the Soho Theatre

Sally Phillips and Lily Bevan: Talking to Strangers
Soho Theatre
Reviewed on Wednesday 6th July 2016
★★★★

If, like myself, you are already a fan of Sally Phillips and Lily Bevan, it will come as no surprise to you that a show written and starring the duo is outrageously funny. Before jetting off to Edinburgh, Phillips and Bevan’s hysterically awkward play Talking to Strangers played a few performances at the Soho Theatre.

The piece consists of Phillips and Bevan either playing characters that ordinary British people will always do their best to avoid in any social situation, or ordinary British people forced into social situations that they would rather stick pins in their eyes than endure.

The characters force the audience to watch the scenes unravel into the depths of awkward conversational topics. These topics included discussing your sex life, drawing your husbands penis and being forced into stepping in for a sick actress and performing the role of Catherine of Aragon (or, arrogant as Bevan’s character believed) to an eager audience of historians because you are just too damn polite to refuse. Oh god.

Talking to Strangers is utterly charming from start to finish, but has the quick edge and wit that forces you to hoot with laughter when you least expect it. Yet you find yourself sympathising with some of these desperately lonely characters as they speak to a room full of strangers in search of some companionship.

The highlight of the show is Bevan’s character Lucy, who makes the toe-curling awkward phone call to the ‘man from the night before’… and is left alone with his voicemail. With no other characters to control the ramblings of a hungover, awkward young woman, the character spirals into an eight-minute answerphone message which leaves the audience cackling with laughter (whilst also thinking, ‘thank god my best friend proofreads all of my hungover text messages’).

Overall Talking to Strangers  is wickedly funny and scarily relatable. The show left every audience member weak from laughter and regimented with the firm British belief that talking to strangers, unaccompanied, will always be a terrible idea.

Review: The Deep Blue Sea at the National Theatre

The Deep Blue Sea
National Theatre (Lyttelton)
Reviewed on Monday 11th June 2016
★★★★★

After their critical success with Medea in 2014, director Carrie Cracknell reunites with Helen McCrory to revive Terence Rattigan's devastating masterpiece The Deep Blue Sea.

McCrory plays Hester Collyer, a women lost in the waves of love. In fact she has fallen so deeply, the threat of her feelings being unrequited have sent her into a suicidal spiral. Her current partner Freddie (Tom Burke) is a drunk, and her wealthy ex-husband William (Peter Sullivan) holds no appeal. It's a story of despair: what do we do when the one thing that keeps us going, the one eternal flame we hold for someone, is extinguished.

Cracknell's production is atmospheric, gripping and tense, playing out almost in real time, giving us a real glimpse into Hester's plight. Tom Scutt's clever apartment set design matched with Stuart Earl's chilling music and Guy Hoare's captivating lighting, create a masterpiece in storytelling. There are some astonishingly beautiful moments of almost stillness in the piece, which divide up the drama, giving the audience a chance to readjust - focus more. In fact, I don't think we've ever been to the National Theatre and heard a pin drop more.

There's strong work from Tom Burke, dishing out barbed putdowns one minute and empty promises the next, whilst Hubert Burton as overly zestful neighbour Philip is warmly charming. Nick Fletcher as Mr Miller is also a treat, as he barters between dry wit and Hester's only friend.

Of course the production belongs to Helen McCrory, and she's devastatingly beautiful. Full of raw emotion, you can feel every inch of her anxiety, her pain and her utter loss at what to do. It really is a heartbreaking performance that is sure to be remembered.

The Deep Blue Sea contains some of Rattigan's most beautiful yet soul-destroying lines of dialogue, and this National Theatre production is as close to a triumph as you'll ever see. Theatre at its best.
